Hannah Horvath, the kooky publishing intern turned barista and aspiring writer played by Lena Dunham in HBO’s Girls, wouldn’t have the closet space for Carrie Bradshaw’s wardrobe in the apartment she shared in Greenpoint, Brooklyn—let alone the budget. But that doesn’t make her or her trio of eccentric besties on the show any less compelling.
“Hannah is on her own page; that is what is so great about dressing her,” says Girls costume designer Jenn Rogien. “We’re very free to experiment.” In other words, when it comes to outfitting her endearingly disheveled character, counterintuitive rules apply (like deliberately wrinkling clothes, for example). With season two set to air January 13, we asked Rogien to pick a look from the spring collections to correspond with each girl and her style idiosyncrasies.
